Enrollment Overview
Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school. Any student who resides in the state of Pennsylvania is eligible to attend.
The Writing and Publishing Department is one of the original five arts departments at Lincoln Park. We have middle school (grades 7-8) and high school (grades 9-12) sections of our department, and enroll students annually in each group.
All students who wish to be considered for admission to the Writing and Publishing Department must:
Fill out a general application.
Fill out a Writing and Publishing application.
Prepare a portfolio of writing samples. Your portfolio should contain samples of your best writing. Ideally, it should include some combination of the following:
Five or six original poems and/or
Two short stories, essays or other examples of prose (fiction or nonfiction) and/or
One excerpt from a longer work of fiction (roughly 10-12 pages)
You do NOT have to submit ALL of the above. We simply want to see multiple examples of your best work. A typical portfolio might include four or five poems and a couple of short stories. It might include a 10-12 page excerpt from a longer work of fiction, a couple of poems, and an essay. Or it might include a short story, a couple of poems, and a dramatic play. There is no single requirement for what we will accept: we just want to see multiple examples of your best work — ideally, if possible, from more than one genre.
Please also include a one-page essay about why you would like to study at Lincoln Park.
All work should be typed, double-spaced, and proofread.
Your work will not be returned, so please be sure to have copies.
Schedule an arts evaluation. Evaluations are normally conducted in February and March. An academic evaluation will take place at the same time, to determine the student’s grade level and course needs.
Enrollment Seminars
The enrollment process begins at the start of the calendar year. Students who wish to enroll are encouraged to attend, with their parents or guardians, an enrollment seminar here at Lincoln Park in January. Those seminar dates are as follows for 2022:
Middle School (grades 7-8 in 2022-23) - Wednesday, 1/12/21 - 6 p.m.
High School (grades 9-12 in 2022-23) - Wednesday, 1/19/21 - 6 p.m.
At our enrollment seminars, you will get general information about Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School. You will also have a chance to ask questions of Dan LeRoy, the director of the Writing and Publishing Department.
At these seminars, you will also be given links to the general enrollment application and the Writing and Publishing application mentioned above. You will be given directions about how to submit your writing portfolio. Finally, you will be given an opportunity to sign up for an evaluation.
If you would like more information about our enrollment seminars, please fill out this form.
Can’t make it? That’s okay - enrollment seminar attendance is encouraged, but it isn’t a requirement. Please contact us and we can help you set up an evaluation.
